RE: Wireless Provider Conspiracy Theory?

If your phone has a SIM card in the back, all you have to do is buy a cheep-o pay-as-you-go phone and put the SIM card in it. The new phone will work just fine. This is a little secret the cell phone companies don't tell you because they want you to buy new phones with big $$$'s. I've replaced 3 different phones this way, and they still work just fine! Now, if your phone does not have a SIM card, that's another problem!

RE: Just Finished Up Our First Season With New Pup

So, why do you think you have to call it "quits" for the season? Just because the kids are back in school now is no reason why you can't enjoy camping all the way up till the temperatures reach freezing! There's always the option to "driveway" camp, take the camper to "grandma's" house, or some other relative you haven't seen in a while, or a friend. We used our pup even in snow and ice when we still had it. Our's never had water in it, and it didn't have a bathroom. It did have a heater, and we did some pretty creative camping in some pretty chilly weather! Anyway, think outside the "summer" (box)and consider other uses you can use the PUP for and keep enjoy it -- even out of season! Good luck!

RE: clean windows

One more thought, when you FINALLY get the windows clean, wash them one more time using window washing fluid used in a car. That stuff works great!

RE: Is this a common 'symptom' of full-timing?

We camp every weekend during the summer, but come home during the week. Someone's gotta go to work you know! Anyway, nothing like waking up and not knowing if you're in the house or the TT. And what day is it? And waking up in the middle of the night, well, that's even more confusing, and getting out of bed to go to the bathroom. I've banged into the closet door in the house many times. Got out of bed and started feeling for the wall that wasn't there. Oh yes, as mentioned above, using the push peddle in the house toilet as well as reaching for the flush handle in the TT. Boy! This camping stuff is confusing!

RE: clean windows

If you have any Calgon water softener, mix up a batch and spray on your windows. It will remove all the hard water build-up without needed to use any kind of chemicals or cleaning chemicals.

Medicine Cabinet and Toilet!

Some of you probably already know where this is headed before I go any further ... right ...??? You got it! Breaking camp earlier today. Wife is cleaning the inside I'm taking care of things outside. As done hundred of time now, put the stick on the toilet peddle to hold the water on to fill the black tank to flush it real good. BIG MISTAKE ... don't open the medicine cabinet unless the toilet seat is down! You guessed it! Perscription bottle jumped right out of the medicine cabinet when she opened the door and went right down the toilet hole into the holding tank. That kind of leaves a sick feeling in the stomach you know. Luckily I use a clear bayonet extension with a 3rd valve on the outside drain. So I began draining the black tank very slow watching for the bottle to float down. Didn't happen. Filled the tank again (we had full hook-up). Did it again. No bottle. OK, think this thing through! I drained ALL the water, completely. I normally don't like to have the tank completely empty, but thought maybe the pill bottle would bounce around and I might get lucky and it would hit the drain hole in the tank. I could check it when I got home! Got home! No bottle fell out onto the ground! Stomach feeling more sick now. Got the garden hose and shoved it down the toilet and let it spray everywhere and opened the black valve and let the water run on the ground. Watched for the bottle to come out! It finally did! Ker-plop on the ground! Lucky again, I only had4pills left and had a new refill before leaving for the 3 day weekend! Moral of the story! If you medicine cabinet is anywhere in the proximity of the toilet, keep the toilet seat down when opening the cabinet! When you fill your tank to flush it out! Keep the seat down, or just don't open the medicine cabinet! You'll never know when those medicine bottles might start jumping around! Oh, and for what it's worth, I threw the bottle with the remaining pills away!

RE: Smoke smell?

Just enjoy it. I love to go out to the camper, open it, and smell the camfire leftovers. We call it seasoning the camper. Only the TT don't hold the smoke smell as good as the pup did. You're right about that. Our pup never did get the campfire smell out. It only got stronger! I think that's why it's so surprising that our current TT airs out so well. Wow! That's a good memory. I forgot out the pup - campfire smell!

RE: Washing my TT

Last summer on our way home from a camping trip, one of the local schools was throwing a car wash. They were taking "free-will donations." I couldn't resist. I pulled in and asked them what the average $$$ they were getting for a typical car. They said $5.00 seemed to be the most common amount. I asked them how much they'd need to wash my truck AND trailer. Well, their eyes got about as big as 2 pizzas and said, "You name your price, we'll wash it!" So I said, "How about $75.00!" Now their eyes really bugged out! Just that quick the entire group ran for buckets, and rags, and hoses, and ladders, and soap!. I pulled out our soft brush and extension pole and gave it to them for the high spots and they all went to town! I did not have them do the roof though. Well, $75 later, that was one happy bunch of kids! I got the Trailer and Truck washed. I felt good helping their class raise some money for their project, and I didn't have to do the work! Now, that's the way to wash the trailer! However, I couldn't afford to do that every week, but once in 10 years is OK!

RE: weight limits for entry steps and furniture

I advise getting one of those pedestal supports that goes under the step. I've got one, use it occasionally. If you don't have one, take some extra lumber you can stack up for support under the step. Furniture? Well, not much you can do there. If she never sits down maybe you'll be ok. How much weight can the floor sustain? I've never thought of that. I'm about 230 pounds myself!

RE: Screen rooms - do you have one?

We have a Quick Shade, 10 x 10 feet. Easy to put up, Easy to take down. We can move it around for additional shade when when the sun shines under the awning, position it over the picnic table, move it anywhere, stores easy too. We've had it for over 10 years now, still love it. Wouldn't consider a screened in room. We like the "shade" idea better. More practical for us, but.... to each his own!

RE: Smoke smell?

Normally, leaving the windows open will air out the campfire smoke after a few days. It may take a bit longer. Our TT has been in some pretty strong campfire smoke and it always airs out and returns to that new "formalhyde" smell, even after 2 years now. But sometimes it does take a week or so.

RE: Newbie needs kitchen tips

Here's another thought, especially if you enjoy cooking on a grill or over an open flame: don't use styrofoam plates. They melt under HOT food! Don't ask how I know. We learned to use paper plates ever since! We often use a really cheep paper plate on top of a Corel type plate (non breakable), then it's just a wipe and go to clean up! No germs either! :)

RE: How do you feel: campgrounds that require a "newer" rig?

I would not even consider staying in such a campground. If they are that "snooty" they can keep it. If they can find someone to rent space, let them go for it! There are other campgrounds I can go to. If I have to worry about "keeping up with the Jones" (literally in such a campground), well, what fun is that? Just remember, the people who are in those campgrounds now, in 5 years will no longer be there. They will be the outcasts, even if their motor home is still valued at $100,000 opposed to a TT for $15,000. "What goes around, comes around" as they say.

RE: Newbie needs kitchen tips

elbmiNrM, We let our crock pot sit outside during the day. Never tried it over night for fear on critters getting into it. However, nothing says you can't run an extension cord and put it in the back of your pick-up truck or back seat floor of your car, shut the door and let it cook! sheilph2, 4-8 hours, depending upon what you're cooking. High temp if you want it quicker and very seldom over 4 hours. Low temp for 5 or more hours and very seldom more than 8 hours. Also, no, WE do not pre-cook and freeze. We freeze raw then cook. Campground cooking is much more fun than doing it at home. Of course, we don't have kids with us any more and do all kinds of activities. We enjoy vegetating, relaxing, and eating! Washing dishes. I grew up washing dishes by hand in the sink, and everything HAD to be dried with a towel. So washing dishes by hand doesn't bother me a bit. Since I was a kid, they came out with dishwashers and "sanitizing" has become the way of life. And drying by a towel is suppose to do nothing but spread germs. They say it's better to air dry. So we do. If you are worried about germs, use a little bleach in your dish water (not too much to hurt your hands, just a little bit, and rinse good), the air dry. But really, washing with dishwashing liquid is sufficient. It's not the washing or lack of washing, it's what touches the dishes AFTER they are washed you've gotta watch out for!

RE: My first Diesel - Newbee Question

Don't know about your F-series, but my Chevy has a post in the middle for attaching jumper cables. Maybe the intent is not to RECEIVE a jump, but to GIVE a jump! As posted above, it takes a lot of UMPH to start a diesel. That little Civic will burn up in a heart beat. However, if YOUR diesel jumps the Civic, the Civic may still go up in flames for all the JUICE you're throwing at it! Ka-poof! There goes the Civic! Oh wow! I wanna see that!

RE: Newbie needs kitchen tips

In our tent days we cooked over a campfire for years until we decided to get a Coleman propane cook stove which lasted for years. Later when we got our PUP, it had a stove that hung on the outside. That was absolutely great. We still cooked over a fire, and we really enjoyed cooking outside on the stove, especially things like bacon that has a lot of grease. Cooking inside with grease popping getting all over everything is just something too nasty we didn't want to deal with, especially on that canvas-cloth material siding. When we got our first TT, the stove did not hang on the outside and before our first trip, we purchased another Coleman stove. This one has a flat griddle on one side and a burner on the other. Great for pancakes, eggs, you name it. Plus, all the grease and mess stayed outside the trailer. OK, so we had a stove inside and a microwave. But the thought of cooking greasy foods and the grease splattering all over and the left over smells that would affix to cloth, walls, and ceiling was not something we wanted to experince. So greasy foods were ALWAYS cooked outside and inside consisted of using the microwave and non-greasy foods. So, when we got our 2nd TT, it had an oven. We still use the same Coleman stove outside for almost every meal. Although now I have 2 stoves, a 20 pound propane tank, the propane tree, hoses, and a lantern to attach to the top of the tree (great for taking the tank and lantern night fishing!) We use the inside oven a lot. Breakfast rolls, dinner rolls, cakes, cookies, pies, you name it. The inside stove is still used for non greasy foods, especially at night (around midnight) when I get hungry and want a quick hot-dog boiled in water or something like that. I really enjoy the outside cooking experience and still use (2 Coleman stoves) for almost every meal. Now this last week-end my wife bought a new crock-pot and we used it. Oh my, that was wonderful! Started the thing on Friday Night and had some fantastic crock-pot beef tips in mushroom sauce about noon the next day! Now that was hard to sleep through with the smell all night long. Everyone does it different approach to camp cooking. You may want to try all these methods to add variety to YOUR experience: Cook over a fire, Cook on the stove inside the RV, Cook on a camp stove outside, use a crock-pot, use an electric frying pan. Yes, we use an electric frying pan outside also, in all kinds of weather. Be flexible, try different thing. The important thing is to make it fun! (and keep clean-up as simple and short as possible). Good luck!
